The Royal Sportsman is Porthmadog's premier Hotel the only full service quality Hotel in Porthmadog with star ratings awarded by both the Welsh Tourist Board and the AA. This Victorian Hotel was built in 1862 as the main staging post in the area since the Cambrian Railway did not arrive in Portmadog until 1867. The Hotel was famous for its own liveried carriage and horses stabled in what is now the garage to take customers from the Hotel to their destinations The physical structure of the Hotel was built from local Blaenau Ffestiniog slate which is still visible from the outside and the many original features particularly the stone and slate fireplaces in the Tafarn Bar and Madog Lounge which have now been restored.
